The Libertines seem set to reunite for a gig at Hyde Park. The group's official Facebook page appears to corroborate a recent interview withPete Doherty, where the singer said he planned to reconvene the band as a way of coping with "financial problems".
On Sunday morning, a spokesperson for the Libertines published a map of Hyde Park to their Facebook group. Though the image wasn't given a caption, fans were quick to interpret its meaning. "The Libertines Live in Hyde Park!" wrote one. "Make it happen," pleaded another.
The Libertines' Hyde Park tease didn't come out of nowhere: over the past few days, outlets like Consequence of Sound and the Music Charger had begun to report on a Hebrew-language interview Doherty conducted last week. "I don't know if I should tell you this, but the Libertines were offered a concert in Hyde Park this July," the singer told YNet. "They called me just yesterday ... I said yes."
"I think that if you asked me the same question, most days, I'd say no," Doherty went on. "But just recently I tried to contact Carl [Barât] and I couldn't reach him, and I sat down and listened to some Libertines songs on YouTube, and suddenly had a burst of nostalgia. So I said, 'Why the hell not!' And then they told me what they would pay us and, well, I can't lie to you: I couldn't say no, at least not in my situation right now."
Doherty, who is currently on tour, apparently owes a lot of money. It was much the same in 2005, when he claimed debt was the reason he was dating Kate Moss, and in 2012, when he said he had so many bills he couldn't "show [his] face" in London. Doherty is allegedly struggling with a new set of alimony payments since learning he has a year-and-a-half-old daughter. "It's very complicated for me to say no right now," he explained.
Unfortunately it also seems like it would be complicated for Carl Barât to say yes to the Libertines. The guitarist has only recently finalised thelineup of his new band, the Jackals, whom he has been introducing, member by member, on Facebook. They have recently been working in studio and rehearsing for a debut gig at London's Xoyo on 15 May. Barât has yet to comment on reports of the Libertines comeback.
The Libertines last performed together at the 2010 Reading festival.
